Total War: Shogun 2 is het vervolg op het in 2000 verschenen Shogun: Total War. Feodaal Japan werd ooit geregeerd door één overheid, maar is inmiddels opgesplitst in veel verschillende clans, met een voorliefde voor oorlogsvoering. Jij stapt in de schoenen van een Daimyo, een leider van een clan, om zo Japan te verenigen onder de vlag van jouw clan. De game speelt zich tien jaar na Shogun: Total War af. In Total War: Shogun 2 hanteren de vijanden ten opzichte van Empire: Total War slimmere strategieën. Daarnaast zijn er nieuwe multiplayermodi toegevoegd.

Deze titel bevat Medieval II: Total War en het uitbreidingspakket KingdomsOpvallend is wel dat het de eerste keer is dat er geen nieuw tijdperk gebruikt wordt voor een Total War-spel. Eerder deed de serie al het oude Japan (Shogun: Total War) en het Romeinse rijk (Rome: Total War) aan, maar ook de middeleeuwen werden al eens gebruikt, in Medieval: Total War. Nu komt er dus een tweede Middeleeuwen epos. De game speelt zich af tussen de jaren 1080 en 1530, een tijd waarin Europa gebukt ging onder de vele oorlogen. De speler kan zijn borst nat maken bij veldslagen, waarbij je meer dan 10.000 eenheden tegelijk op het beeld ziet, en waarbij er 250 verschillende soorten eenheden geteld kunnen worden. Mediaval II: Total War Kingdoms is een uitbreiding voor de game Mediaval II: Total War. De add-on heeft vier nieuwe campagnes en biedt de mogelijkheid om The New World te onderzoeken; het gebied dat aan het eind van Medieval 2 werd vrijgespeeld. In de Americas-campagne stappen spelers in de voetsporen van Hernán Cortés in 1519 terwijl hij de macht probeert te grijpen in The New World. Spelers kunnen ondersteuning krijgen van Spanje en de mysteriën en rijkdommen van The New World ontdekken. Ook kunnen ze spelen met de Azteekse of Indiaanse factie en zich beroepen op de goden en het lef van enorme legers om de nieuwe bedreiging tegen te gaan. Buiten deze campagne zijn er nog drie, meer gedetailleerde, campagnes in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Noord-Europa en het Heilige Land met meer gebieden dan in de originele Medieval II te vinden waren. Spelers kunnen in Kingdom met duizenden mannen tegelijk het slagveld op in Kingdoms. Bovendien bevat deze uitbreiding nieuwe hero-personages zoals Richard the Lioheart en Salasin die elk hij eigen krachtige vaardigheden hebben. Medieval II: Total war Kingdoms bevat in totaal 75 uur aan nieuwe gameplay, 13 nieuwe speelbare zijdes en meer dan 150 nieuwe eenheden, waaronder de Griekse vlammenwerper.
